Pit bull thrown out of car in cardboard box is now safe thanks to a wonderful rescue

Drivers throwing trash out of their car window is nothing new. From wrappers, to empty soda bottles, to food - roadsides are littered with trash. When one driver saw a car pull over the side of the road in Hopkinton, RI and dump a cardboard box over the guardrail, though, they knew it wasn't just ordinary trash.
Upon further inspection, the box held an emaciated, scared, and injured 4-year-old pit bull. The driver immediately called the police and Officer James Eastwood arrived on the scene. Officer Eastwood climbed over the guardrail and down the embankment in order to carry the dog to safety.

The dog could hardly walk and was covered in scars and bruises, potentially from others dogs and humans. Handsome Dan's Rescue was then called to take him in. They decided to call him Eastwood (Woody for short) after the officer who saved him.
The founder and president of Handsome Dan's Rescue, Heather Gutshall, the lead shelter enrichment specialist for Handsome Dan's Rescue, Jacqueline Baffoni, and Officer Joe Warzycha of the Rhode Island SPCA went to meet Woody and found a scared and defeated dog.

He was then taken to the Hopkinton Animal Shelter to evaluate his behavior. Despite his uncertain past, Woody was quickly accepting of treats and touches. His health, though, was another story.
Woody was extremely emaciated when he was found and had an abscess on his chest that was removed. He has numerous scars that looked to be consistent with dogfighting (though Handsome Dan's Rescue has not speculated that he was from organized dogfighting), a torn ear, a cut on his mouth that runs to the corner of his cheek, and notches on his tongue. Woody was finally able to visit the vet, probably for the first time in his life, and Handsome Dan's Rescue is waiting to hear back regarding his blood work. Thankfully, though, Woody is making progress faster than expected. With the proper love and care he so desperately deserves, he'll be a brand new dog in no time.

Mama and Jacqueline. Notice that cut on the side of his face starting from the corner of his mouth.
