First, his father adopted a dog from the shelter: Max. For all the troubles he had, Dad still had it in his heart to rescue a little pup and give him a good life. Unfortunately, just over two years later, he passed away.

KingKizer's sister, a veteran and deep-sea diver — and most importantly, animal lover — stepped in to save the day. She had been deployed to Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina and saved many stranded cats and dogs by raft. Plus, she's just plain awesome.

She took Max in and gave him a caring, loving home. When the vet gave the sad news that Max had severe cirrhosis of the liver, she spent upwards of $15,000 getting him back to good health. A steep price to pay, but a small price for a tribute to their late father.

Max was happy and healthy, and lived a full year with his new family.

Here he is as part of the family during Christmas. He got along wonderfully with everyone, including their resident dog. Max's new owners understood how to make introductions — something perhaps you're wondering about too. If so, follow this amazing guide by PetMD. It involves starting out by putting each dog in a separate cage, then letting the new dog explore the house on his own, and then switching to the old dog. It's a process, but it's worth it!

Sadly, the veteran and her husband received the news that, at 3 1/2 years old, Max wasn't doing so well again, and didn't have long to live. But they're just happy they've gotten to give him an amazing year of life, love and happiness, and to honor their late father's life.

We know, it's a tearjerker! But it's also inspiring and restores our faith in humanity. Share this with any family and friends that would appreciate this amazing family and all they did for Max!
