A tragic traffic accident in Paraiba, Brazil, took Wagner Figueiredo de Lima, pictured below, from his loved ones when he was just 34. Lima and his horse Sereno had grown inseparable.
Dozens of friends and family gathered for Lima’s funeral, and his brother, Wando, thought it only fitting that Sereno should be included in the procession.
Nobody had anticipated what was going to happen during the ceremony.
When the van carrying the coffin arrived, Sereno seemed to know it carried his cherished friend. "[Sereno] began to walk around the coffin, smelling the coffin. Then he neighed," attendee Kyioshi Abreu told The Dodo. "It was a very strong emotion. Everyone who was there was moved. I cried myself when I saw that scene."
Wando stated the horse conveyed the impression that he knew what was going on. He wanted to say goodbye. “This horse was everything to [Lima],” Wando said. Sereno joined the other mourners as they walked to Lima’s final resting place.
It was obvious that Sereno was distraught, Wando told Globo News. He whimpered and stomped his hooves all the way to the cemetery.
Did Sereno really know what was going on? It’s hard to tell. One thing’s for sure, though. The horse misses his friend.
Wando and his family have taken the horse in, to live with them and recover from the loss of a dear one together. However animals mourn the loss of their humans, it is certain that this horse won’t have to go it alone, thanks to the compassion of his new owners.
