Dog helps rescue a hummingbird. This footage proves the special bond they share

Paying it forward has taken on a whole new meaning with the story of Rex, a rescued feral dog, and Hummer, a tiny, injured hummingbird. Read on to learn about a miraculous rescue and the beautiful relationships that developed because of it.
A year ago, Rex, a German Shepard mix, was a feral dog living on the streets. His adopter, Ed Gernon of Whittier, California, told CBSLosAngeles that Rex was a dangerous "animal that had learned to live on the streets and to survive on his own hunting ability, I guess.”

And so Gernon was shocked when, as they were out walking in their neighborhood one afternoon, Rex found an injured, dying hummingbird --- and refused to leave it behind. Gernon recalls that Rex "suddenly stopped and he would not move. I mean it’s tiny and it’s dead as far as I’m concerned. It’s covered in ants. It’s got no feathers.”
But Rex wouldn't leave the little bird to die alone and unmourned. So Gernon decided to follow Rex's lead and give the bird a chance to live. The Dodo notes how deeply moved Gernon was by his dog's actions. "It was this little creature. This fragile creature that the whole world wanted to kill and he was trying to protect her so I thought I'd go the distance."
The duo took the little bird, named Hummer, back home where a miraculous recovery took place. Gernon kept Hummer alive by feeding her a special sugar formula every fifteen minutes. He even taught her how to fly by using a hair dryer!
And as Hummer gained strength and grew up, she adopted faithful Rex as her best friend, next to Gernon of course. On Gernon's Youtube Channel, he says, "Wherever he was, she wanted to be close by. She even started bathing in his water bowl, killing time while he ate before she'd start playing with him again. So strange, but amazing."
Now, over a year later, Hummer still lives with Gernon and Max. Gernon says that living with a hummingbird is "crazy [...] You live with Tinkerbell." Gernon marvels at the circle of life that has drawn himself, Rex, and Hummer together. "I rescue this dog. He rescues the bird," Gernon told CBSLosAngeles. "The bird rescues all of us in a weird sense and it's just a miracle."
Gernon knows some point soon Hummer will need to leave to find a mate, so he keeps his windows open for her to leave when she's ready. Until that time, though, Hummer will always have a loving home with her rescuers.
