After being tied to a dumpster and left to die this sweet dog now has the life he deserves

I'm a writer. It's my job to write all kinds of stories about dogs. So when I read about situations like this one, at first my stomach knots up and I feel ill. I want to cry angry tears. And then—I rejoice!
Charlie is a two-year-old pit bull mix who was found tied to a dumpster, abandoned by his owners and left to die. (There goes my stomach again!) His face was terribly beaten and swollen from the damage done to his head. When two wonderful people saw him, he was curled into a ball, alone and terribly, terribly sad.

But when the pair approached him, he neither drew back nor charged in anger. Though he was in awful pain, he approached them willingly, begging for help. And they didn't let him down.
They took him to Philadelphia Animal Hospital where the vets were astonished and dismayed at what they discovered. “We lifted up his jowls, and the inside of his cheeks and lip were entirely infested with maggots,” Adria Rebbecchi, director of communications for the animal hospital, related. “He was in so much pain that he didn’t even want to move.”
“One of the people who brought him to us has been a client for a long time — and when we saw Charlie, we felt so passionate toward getting him the help he needed,” Rebbecchi said. “My father, who owns the practice, decided to cover all of his medical costs right then and there.”
Immediate pain medication relieved the discomfort, and surgery was scheduled for his lip and mouth. Unfortunately, the infestation was so advanced that his mouth tissue could not be saved. The vets decided on one surgery each week until some of his lip could grow back. The injury was severe, and Charlie had a hard time eating. Small meals offered several times throughout the day made it possible for Charlie's body to heal and as he did, his stellar personality emerged.
An important part of his treatment was the hands-on attention he got from City of Elderly Love volunteer Natalie Barber, who visited him regularly. His affection for her was as obvious as hers was for him, and when a foster home was needed, everyone knew she was the perfect person.
When Charlie moved in with his new foster family, there was another dog to keep him company. But after his ordeal at the hands of other humans, it is surprising that his favorite person is Natalie's son, Lucas. The trust he has in his new family is almost palpable.

Charlie was microchipped when he came in and his former owners are being investigated. Now that his nightmare is over, Charlie may soon be needing a forever home. For now, he's happy where he is—and my heart rejoices. Doesn't yours? Share Charlie's story. Let's put an end to animal cruelty!
