Even though this greyhound saved her owner's life he still abandoned her

Rita was a Greyhound from Australia who was bred to race. When her racing days were over, Rita's owner retired her to a kennel and excessively overbred her. Sadly, this is the typical fate of a racing Greyhound who is no longer profitable enough to run: a life confined to a small area, continually becoming pregnant, having litters, then doing the same thing all over again. But despite the conditions she was kept in, Rita never lost her loving spirit. When she saved her owner, she deserved praise and love. What she got was a kick to the curb.
In an emergency, Rita stepped in to save the day. "The man was unconscious and Rita left her puppies and stood over him, barking incessantly until someone checked on her alarm,"said Victoria Sublette, a member of the Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds.

"The man was found, an ambulance was called, and this man’s life was saved by this very special greyhound, Rita," Sublette said. One would think that Rita would be cherished by the owner for her dedication and loyalty, but instead, she lived the same miserable life for two years before her owner dumped her at the veterinarian's office.
That's when Rita's life changed for the better. Lorraine Ramsay, of the Rescued Greyhounds NSW Central Coast, stepped in to foster Rita. She noticed that the Greyhound had a worrisome pink spot on her nose that was sore to the touch. A visit to the veterinarian confirmed the worst: the spot was a cancerous mast cell tumor. Rita's life was in danger.
With Ramsay's dedication and the assistance of many people who donated to Rita's cause, the Greyhound was taken to a specialist who used chemotherapy to reduce the tumor to a reasonable size so it could be removed through surgery. The entire procedure cost $11,000, but the loving members of Rita's fan club came through to cover the bill!
Now, a year later, Rita is living with Ramsay and is free of cancer. "Today, Rita is 7 years old and has been cleared of all signs of cancer," Sublette said. "She lives with Lorraine and her other rescue greyhounds and rescue cats full-time and is thoroughly enjoying her life as a beloved pet and companion. Lorraine is completely in love with her and cherishes every moment they spend together."
Rita loves her life with Ramsay, and she helps out, too, by assisting all Theo the other Greyhounds that Ramsay fosters make the transition from the racing life to the good life. “Rita now lives a loved life helping other ex-racers assimilate into pet life,” Ramsay said.
Rita will live permanently with Ramsay and has become best friends with another of Ramsay's Greyhounds, Sandy. "They are my guardian angels," Ramsay explained.
Thankfully, Rita will live out the rest of her life happy and loved, thanks to the efforts of the rescue, the kindness of people who donated, and the dedication of Lorraine Ramsay. Never again will Rita's loyalty and love be ignored or unappreciated! Share Rita's story with your friends and family on Facebook.
