Homeless man makes a heartbreaking sacrifice so his dog can have a better life

When a homeless man rode up on his bike to the East Bay SPCA in Oakland, California, employees were stunned to find a dog running beside him. Vets at the SPCA quickly realized the dog had obvious medical issues, including a noticeable limp in her leg.
According to her owner, the dog – named Sheba – had gotten into a fight with another dog and hurt her leg. Sheba's owner attempted to bandage the dog's leg up himself. Vets quickly identified that the smells coming from the bandage were a sign that the wound was infected.

Unfortunately, Sheba’s owner was unable to afford her medical care. East Bay SPCA could take over responsibility of the dog if the owner was willing to surrender her. That’s when he knelt down and said, “I love you and this is the best that I can do for you right now.” (Pawsitivestories.com).
That was the last time East Bay SPCA saw Sheba's owner.
The doctors quickly went to work. Sheba suffered fractures in her radius and ulna. The vets determined that the most humane way to deal with the would be amputation.
Sheba was able to make a full recovery. She remains a sweet, cheerful pup with a heart of gold. She doesn’t even seem to realize she is missing a leg!
And, after her recovery, Sheba even got adopted! Sheba (now Gracie) is now with her new parents in a loving, safe home.
Surrendering a dog is not an easy thing to do – especially when you share a deep bond like Sheba and her former owner. But he knew that in order for her to live a long, happy life, he needed to be selfless. And thanks to him, she is now well on her way.
