Many experts agree that a dog with a job (among other things) is a happier dog; he feels useful and fulfilled. Makes sense, doesn’t it? As humans, we like to have a purpose, or we can get bored and destructive too.
Well, Bazz, an Australian black lab, has a job. He sniffs out the disease of honeybees called the American foulbrood. Bazz’s job is very important, for according to Bee Base, foulbrood disease can be the death of bee colonies. And as One Green Planet states (in part), our world would be very different without them for bees pollinate about one-sixth of our flowering plants and 400 different types of agricultural plants.

While Bazz’s job certainly is important and it’s certainly not boring, he does face a unique problem. He’s having trouble getting close to the hives.
According to an article on Australia’s ABC News site, beekeeper Josh Kennett had trained Bazz to sniff out the terrible bee disease. He explained there are dogs in the United States performing comparable work, but unlike where he is in South Australia, their cold temperatures and snow keep the bees inside the hives so the dogs can do their work.
So, Josh had to get creative. He needed to design a suit for Bazz to protect him. After many attempts, he’s designed a working prototype.
Now, onto the next hurdle: getting Bazz to feel comfortable. Josh states it’s going to take time for Bazz to do his job in the suit. “It’s hard to change a dog’s habits overnight,” he says.
