A tragic traffic accident in Paraiba, Brazil, took Wagner Figueiredo de Lima, pictured below, from his loved ones when he was just 34. Those loved ones included his horse, Sereno; the pair were inseparable.
Dozens of friends and family gathered for Lima’s funeral. His brother, Wando, thought it only fitting that Sereno should be included in the procession.

Nobody anticipated what happened during the ceremony.
When the van carrying the coffin arrived, Sereno seemed to know it carried his cherished friend. "[Sereno] began to walk around the coffin, smelling the coffin. Then he neighed," attendee Kyioshi Abreu told The Dodo. "It was a very strong emotion. Everyone who was there was moved. I cried myself when I saw that scene.'"
The horse seemed to know what was going on, according to Wando. He wanted to say goodbye. “This horse was everything to [Lima],” Wando said. Sereno joined the other mourners as they walked to Lima’s final resting place.
Sereno was obviously distraught, Wando told Globo News. The horse whimpered and stomped his hooves all the way to the cemetery.
Did Sereno really know what was going on? It’s hard to tell. One thing’s for sure, though: The horse misses his friend.
Wando and his family have taken the horse in to live with them and recover from the loss together. In whatever way animals mourn the loss of their humans, it's certain that this horse won’t have to go it alone, thanks to the compassion of his new owners.
