Cat was struggling to survive winter, but several strokes of luck were about to happen

It was a chilly December afternoon in rural Colorado. Sammy was hunkered down in a snowy field, trying to get the last remnants of an old sandwich out of a discarded wrapper. That's when luck was about to change for the skinny cat with the muddy fur.
Tracey, an animal lover with a huge heart, was on her way to a meeting and opted to caravan with some friends. She decided to wait for them at the exact curve on the dirt road where Sammy was scrounging to find something to eat.

What a coincidence, right? It gets better.
Tracey not only loves cats, dogs and all other critters, she happened at the time to work for a pet food company. She had some cat treats with her, and when she and Sammy spotted each other, she opened the door for the cat to hop into her warm car. Sammy gorged on treats -- he was famished!
Sammy caught yet another lucky break. Among the friends on the way to meet Tracey was Cathy, a gal who had four years of experience working in animal rescue. Cathy had a place to keep Sammy safe while he rested and recovered from his ordeal in the countryside. The two women took Sammy to Cathy's "kitty house."

Over the next several days, Sammy slept and ate. Cathy found that although the cat was thin and his fur was dirty and matted, he was otherwise in good health. Her veterinarian agreed. The young neutered male cat had obviously been a pet at one time; he was trusting and affectionate. It was heartbreaking to think that someone would deliberately abandon such a great guy to fend for himself.
In trying to determine whether Sammy was simply lost, Cathy posted several notices locally. No one claimed the gray and white cat who was blossoming in Cathy's care. Then Sammy's ultimate stroke of luck happened -- a woman inquired about adopting the cat for her grandmother. Was Sammy mellow and loving enough to be a companion for a senior?
