Dog was discovered alone at airport, along with a heartbreaking note from owner

Chewy, a 3-month-old miniature Chihuahua, was found abandoned in a Las Vegas airport bathroom. He had injuries to his head and looked as if he had been abused.
In many cases, animals left behind in this manner are dumped by their abusers, but Chewy's situation was different. Next to Chewy in the bathroom was a handwritten note. Written from the dog's point of view, it introduced Chewy and explained why he had been left there alone. Chewy's former owner was a victim of domestic violence, and she had taken her dog and fled from her abuser before running out of funds to pay for Chewy's airfare.

The note read:
Hi! I’m Chewy! My owner was in an abusive relationship and couldn’t afford me to get on the flight. She didn’t want to leave me with all her heart but she has NO other option. My ex-boyfriend kicked my dog when we were fighting and he has a big knot on his head. He probably needs a vet. I love Chewy sooo much — please love and take care of him.”
The note is heartbreaking because of the ordeal Chewy's owner was facing. Research shows that the most dangerous period for a person in an abusive relationship is when she chooses to leave, because this threatens the abuser's control over the situation.
Chewy's owner was not only brave enough to leave, but she also loved her dog enough to realize that her current situation was not in Chewy's best interests.
Connor and Millie's Dog Rescue CMDR took Chewy in and are treating his wounds, both the physical and emotional. Since Chewy's story went viral, the organization has seen both an overwhelming number of offers to adopt him and a significant amount of donations to help reunite Chewy with his former owner.
Connor and Millie's Dog Rescue stated on their Facebook page:
"Chewy is hale and hearty recovered from his injuries and will be available for adoption in 4 weeks if his Mom has not made contact. Due to the thousands of requests, we are not accepting anymore applications.
We will absolutely reunite should she come forward and wants him and is in the position to care for him safely. Her safety is a major concern and she may not be able to risk coming forward and CMDR asks that you respect her decision as it is hers and hers alone to make."
Whether Chewy is reunited with his mom or adopted into a new loving family, his story will have a happy ending. That's thanks to the sacrifice his former owner made to give him a chance to live happily and safely, as all creatures should.
