Recently widowed grandmother of 72 years, Melani Andrews from Galt, CA, was lonely. Her children suggested that she relieve her grief by adopting an animal. Melani decided to go adopt an animal no one else wanted. So, she went down to the Front Street Animal Shelter in Sacramento, CA and asked them to show her their longest resident there. That's how she ended up adopting Jake on August 10, 2017.
Jake was 12 years old and very ill, a senior dog with terminal skin cancer. He had skin sores and teeth problems, and was also part deaf and blind. He was a little dog, a terrier mix, so he was constantly being left behind when it came to adoption time. When Jake started howling as soon as she spotted him at the shelter, while the other two dogs with him ignored her, Melani decided to take the chance.
In addition to losing her husband, Melani had also lost another beloved dog, a Staffordshire terrier named Lola. She wanted to replace her with a shelter dog who desperately needed a home, but was unlikely ever to get one.
Since Jake is terminally ill, the shelter staff have told Melani that she's not likely to have much longer with him. But she's hoping to make his final time with her as happy as possible.
Already, he's perked up so much that she's hoping for another year or two. But however long it will be, it looks as though Jake has found his forever home.
