Steve Donovan, a pizza deliveryman for Papa John's, found himself with an extra special delivery one day when he was working. While driving to drop off some pizza for a customer, he spotted what looked to be a dog dashing across the street, into and around traffic.
Within seconds, Donovan had turned his car around to head back to where he saw the dog. "I was about to turn onto a major road and I saw him run across the street," explained Donovan. "I immediately turned around and went back. I couldn't just leave the dog out there."
Donovan got out of his car and eventually spotted the dog nearby. He picked the dog up and brought him to the safety of the car. The dog's identification tag stated that he was Mr. Snickers, and he lived in a neighborhood not far from where they were located.
"I thought at first he was a little puppy black lab, but as I got closer, I saw he was just a really old cute dog with gray on his face," Donovan said. "I was like, ‘You definitely should not be running around out here.'"
Donovan was determined to get Mr. Snickers back home, but he had a slowly cooling pizza to deliver first.
"The dog was really chill," Donovan said. "He didn't try and eat the pizza at all."
When they arrived at the customer's home, Donovan raced up to their front door with their order. He apologized for being late with their order, and he explained why the lateness occurred. "I told them, 'I'm sorry your pizza is late; I just had to rescue this dog first,'" Donovan said.
Far from being annoyed, the customers found Donovan's generosity of spirit to be refreshing.
Finally, Donovan got Mr. Snickers to his home, only to find out that it was the dog's home no longer. The dog's owner had recently moved and had yet to up0date Mr. Snickers' identification takes with the new address. This confusion may explain why Mr. Snickers got lost in the first place. A neighbor who was still in touch with Mr. Snickers' owner offered to house the dog until his owner arrived to pick him up.
Donovan was so adamant that he was doing the right thing that he had no worries about losing his job for going off his route and out of the way to help the dog. "I wouldn't mind getting fired over this," Donovan said. "I mean, it's a dog running in the street. I had to help him."
We salute Donovan for his compassion and care for all living creatures. Watch the video of his ride with Mr. Snickers, and share this uplifting story with your friends and family on Facebook.
