The Sanctuary explains its origins: "In 2006, a colony of endangered Hawaiian Petrels was discovered on Lanai Hale. After this discovery, we reconsidered our approach of releasing the cats after they were spayed and neutered."
"We had to find a way to create a shelter where we could care for the cats for the rest of their lives, or until we could find homes for them."
The founders of the Sanctuary decided to create a cageless, glassless sanctuary, and the concept for the Lanai Cat Sanctuary was born. The shelter became fully operational in 2008.
Today, the refuge receives thousands of visitors who come from as far away as Japan to meet and play with these beautiful cats.
The Lanai Cat Sanctuary brightens the day of anyone who visits, but more importantly, it brightens the lives of the rescue cats who are so deserving of all the love and attention they can get.
All the cats at the Sanctuary are available for adoption, so the next time you're looking for an ideal vacation spot, think Hawaii and the Lanai Cat Sanctuary! You might just find the cat you've always been looking for.
