Ellie Haywood of Melbourne, Australia, and her roommates weren't renting the best of apartments. The place is old, with cracks and holes in the walls and floors, but the price is reasonable. So Haywood and her friends put up with the decrepit flat, even with the ceiling that leaks when it rains. But a recent rainstorm brought a visitor to their home that no one was expecting.
As she was getting ready for bed, Haywood heard an odd scratching sound coming from the ceiling above. "We had heard meowing in the wall for a few days beforehand," she said, but the roommates figured that the cat and kittens were on the roof of the house. Suddenly, they all heard a crash, and went running into Haywood's room. There they found a completely unexpected sight!

There on the floor was a feral mother cat and her kitten! Up above them was a hole in the ceiling which they had apparently fallen through. "Part of my bedroom ceiling caved in and a kitten fell out of it. No one actually saw the kitten and his mother fall through but we found them straight away," Haywood explained.

Frightened, the mother cat ran out of the house leaving her kitten behind. The baby cat was confused and panicked; he spat and hissed at the people around him. "It was the first time he'd seen anything other than his mother and the inside of our roof," Haywood pointed out.

The mother cat never came back for her kitten, so Haywood decided to name him Asbestos and keep him for her own. He quickly turned from an upset, hissing kitten to a purring, cuddly love bug. Asbestos figured out right away that he had fallen into the right situation.

Asbestos is growing up quickly, and Haywood and her roommates are thrilled to have him in their lives. The feeling is quite mutual! "He makes us so happy. He's very active and still a bit clingy, but he's getting there," said Haywood. "We all work different hours so he's pretty much constantly spoilt for attention."

While the ceiling in their apartment might still be leaky and falling apart, at least Haywood and her friends have a loving, cuddly cat to snuggle! Follow Asbestos's adventure on Instagram, then share this charming story with your family and friends on Facebook.
