A call came into Feed Friends Foundation rescue on the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao from a concerned neighbor. The person had heard that a dog owner was going to dump the pup because he was severely underweight and suffered from serious skin issues. With the address in hand, rescue volunteers raced to the dog's location and found a terrible sight.
The emaciated dog was chained outside to a car bumper with no water available; he was chewing on coconut because that was the only food nearby. As the rescuers approached, it shied away but then began to slowly wag its tail as if realizing that heroes were there to take him away. Feed Friends Foundation called the dog Mickey, and the foundation took him from the owner and rushed him to a veterinarian.
Mickey's medical condition was dire, but after the veterinarian examination, no other major health problems were found other than starvation, neglect and scabies. Time, care, medical treatments and love were the best ways for 6-month-old Mickey to recover and gain confidence in himself. Feed Friends Foundation placed him with a foster home who gave him the chance to learn how to be a dog.
In his foster home, Mickey had the chance to establish trust with people again, to play with his canine siblings, and to walk and enjoy the fresh air and smells on the island. This puppy felt the comfort of lying on a clean bed and taking a nap knowing he was in a safe, secure place.
After a few months, Mickey blossomed under the care of his foster family, and the time was right for him to be placed in a forever home. Feed Friends Foundation found the perfect fit for Mickey: a family with two young boys and two other dogs. Now Mickey looks like a new dog, happy, alert and grateful for the life he now lives.
Thankfully, Mickey's story has a happy ending, and he can live the life that every dog should. Check out the video for more of Mickey's story, including pictures of his recovery and his life with his new family.
